6s Left to Rue What Could Have Been After Extra-Time Defeat

Dorkinian 6th XI 1 v 3 Thorntonians 5th XI
Pixham, 08/02/2025

Dorkinian 6s bowed out of the cup semi-final after a hard-fought battle against Thorntonians 5s on a muddy, bruising pitch. The game embodied the spirit of grit and determination, best seen in Sturmey, who cracked his head open, only to return to the field looking like prime Terry Butcher. Despite the 3-1 scoreline flattering the visitors, Dorkinians were well in the contest. Thorntonians took the lead, but with 20 minutes left, Ridler equalized to set up a tense finish. Dorkinians then had a golden chance to win it, as Sutherland won a penalty, but Ridler’s effort crashed against the bar. They ended normal time on top and were left frustrated not to have settled it in 90 minutes.

That disappointment proved costly, as Thorntonians found another gear in extra time, taking a 2-1 lead early on before sealing it late as Dorkinians pushed for an equalizer. A tough loss for captains Ward and Butterly, but they can hold their heads high—this side is having a fantastic season and will now turn their focus back to the league title push. Special mention to the strong Dorkinians support on the sidelines, proving once again that this club stands together, no matter the team.
