Old Ignatian 2 - 3 Dorkinian 1st XI
22/03/2025
Dorkinians first team brought a difficult string of fixtures to a close this weekend with a trip to Ignatians. After a hard earnt point at home against Bealonians last Saturday and a close defeat to Reigate Priory midweek, the long trip and difficult pitch were the last thing a tired squad needed. Despite this it was Dorks who dominated early - scoring almost immediately via a dangerous darting throw from Wisbey that was caressed home by Woodman.
Relaxation turned into complacency however as Dorks style of play descended into being too direct. Playing into the hands of Ignatians, possession was ceded too easily and the opposition were able to counter effectively, scoring two goals on the break. Going in at half-time, Dorks knew they still had all the necessary ingredients for a victory. Archie Mansfield, the eventual Man of the Match, was called into action early in the second period, making a goal-line clearance after keeper Henry Warne made the angle difficult for the ensuing Ignatians attacker.
Following this brief threat, Dorkinians dominated proceedings. Camped in Ignatians half without any respite for the opposition defence, Dorks mounted attack after attack threatening Ignatians backline. Scovell and Sears-Black went close from close range, while other chances began to just slip through the cracks. Eventually parity was restored after a pinpoint dangerous free kick ball from Ben Leeson was glanced home by George Warne. With momentum one-way, it was only a matter of time before a winner was found. Jonny Walton dutifully obliged, as he dispatched a half-clearance in the dying embers, much to the delight of the first team squad and their travelling support.
Ignatians almost stole a point right at the end, only for a last-ditch combination of Seth Clenaghan and Henry Warne to force the eventual shot over the bar. The Dorkinians Dream rolls on for another week, as they sit top of the AFC Premier. HAC in close pursuit with games in hand, but the outside chance of a league title may just be alive for another week.
