7s Sizzle in Unstoppable Ten Goal Victory

Old Wokingians 7th XI 0 v 10 Dorkinian 7th XI
15/02/25

After picking up an important win on the road last week, the 7s travelled to Woking, hoping to do the same. The game started with early domination from the home side, with the majority of Woking's squad being made up of young players the ball was passed around quickly and effectively by them for the first five to ten minutes of the game. This pressure would result in them breaking through first (and thankfully) their only on-target shot of the game, saved by me, then a second shot was quickly blocked by Lucas to keep the score nil-nil.

Dorking took the lead with a break away one-on-one by Bart, who then also quickly made it two-nil shortly after finishing from a corner. The early domination from the young Woking team had now subsided. Although, still progressing with the ball up the pitch they seemed hesitant to try any shots and would rather try to chance it with a through-ball however, with good communication between me and the back 5, each attempt was either smothered or delt with before Woking could do anything. Tediously, this would be how the remainder of my game would play out, which definitely can not be said for the rest of the team.

Sam made it three-nil with a looping freekick nestling in the top corner after pleading to the team that he would not shoot taking it. Then, just before half-time, Toby would volley in another to make it four. Keeping expectations steady, a reassuring team talk was needed from the gaffers to not get ahead of ourselves and continue with how we were playing.

Goals from here get a bit mixed-up, maybe it was hypothermia attacking me however, Hugh with a bit of skill to get into the box managed a great finish, dinking it over the keeper to make it five. Being five up, everyone wanted a piece of the action. Hugh got a further two goals, one coming from a great assist from Hornsby deciding to leave the centre-back life behind and pursue a new one at right-wing. Being seven up and getting nervous about the clean sheet, I gave the defenders a reminder that I was, in fact, still there and needed a defence. They respond by having Ryan and Sam Steel (both wing backs) pushing further up and getting the last three goals and a few more assists between them.

The game ended Nil-Ten to Dorking. A great performance by everyone on the team and individual jobs were done extremely well, which resulted in another big win and enjoyable game. Shout out to Man of the Match Toby, who was the dominating factor in the midfield and probably had something to do with most of the goals scored. Must also give a kudos to Wokingians 7s. Showing true grit always trying to get back into the game regardless of the score, and thoroughly great hosts after the game as well.

The win moves the 7s up to the heights of fourth in the league, and with a big game back home next weekend, can we make it three wins from three?
